Revealing the current water quality of the Golden Horn spatially and temporally by calculating chlorophyll-a, turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery in Google Earth Engine.
Monitoring water quality in coastal and transitional waters with conventional methods relies on samples taken at a limited number of points, making it both costly and spatially restricted. This project aims to reveal the current water quality of the Golden Horn using open-access Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, covering the entire water surface at regular intervals. Key water quality parameters such as chlorophyll-a, turbidity, TSS, CDOM and DOC will be calculated using spectral algorithms validated in Mediterranean inland and coastal waters, and their spatial distribution and seasonal variation will be examined through time series analysis. The results are intended to provide a fast, low-cost and repeatable information base for decision-making on water quality monitoring and management in the Golden Horn.
